Many local initiatives seeking to benefit the community can only take place with the involvement of volunteers. In particular, volunteers can make a difference to the lives of people who are socially isolated, frail and lonely. And volunteers themselves can benefit from volunteering in terms of learning new skills, becoming more involved with your community, and discovering a new sense of purpose.
Volunteering is something that everyone can do, whatever your interests, wherever you live, whether you have a lot of time or just a little. If you want to change the world, your street or your CV, if you want to make friends, feel useful, put something back or gain a skill, and whether you are young or old, male or female, have additional needs, are employed or unemployed…. you can make a difference!
Volunteer Uttlesford promotes and develops volunteering across Uttlesford. We act as a broker and identify, create and develop volunteering opportunities. We match potential volunteers to opportunities; provide face-to-face information, advice and guidance; perform skills evaluation and matching. We work with 290 local charities and last year placed 805 volunteers. We provide volunteers with support, advice and guidance. We aim to make their experience of volunteering a consistently positive one.
We are particularly keen to encourage young people to volunteer. For example, we can help students interested in business, leadership, the community, politics or social issues to set up a volunteer group.
We also maintain a Professional Skills Exchange – a database of local, specialist volunteers with professional skills and experience.
